Classicial Manaslu Circuit Trek in Brief

The Classical Manaslu Circuit Trek is a stunning trekking destination, as the trail encircles Mount Manaslu. It is the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 m. The Manaslu region provides an authentic Himalayan experience with fewer crowds. Access is limited, allowing only a small number of trekkers to participate. This helps protect the area’s natural beauty and traditional villages. It’s one of the best adventures in Nepal.

The adventure in Manaslu will test your mind, body, and soul. You’ll find a diverse array of plants and animals. As you visit various places, you’ll discover that the local culture is unique, as evident in its ties to Tibetan culture.

Trekkers like yourself can meet local people and learn about ancient traditions and regional history. Despite harsh trail conditions, trekking here is very rewarding. Manaslu is a popular trail known for its natural beauty. You’ll find that the views and terrain are amazing, but navigating them can be tough. Often, you’ll come across rocky and steep paths, and you must cross shaky bridges and navigate slippery rocks along the way.

You’ll discover some popular places and other underrated gems during the classical Manaslu Circuit Trek. Some of the least trekked destinations are the Nubri Valley Trek, the Tsum Valley Trek, the Rupina La Pass Trek, and the Ganesh Himal Base Camp. Additional Information

Encircle the Eighth-Highest Summits and Cross the Larkya La Pass

Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal is a highly popular but challenging high-altitude trek itinerary. Among various other popular treks, such as the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek, and Annapurna Circuit Trek, this trek is less crowded. You want to experience the Manaslu Circuit trek, which encircles the eighth-highest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu, and also crosses one of the highest passes in the world, the Larkya La Pass.

As you start trekking the Manaslu Circuit, you’ll encircle the entire Manaslu mountain range, seeing its north, east, and south sides. Each day, you enjoy views of the summit, in your high altitude trek like Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m) and Himalchuli (7,893 m). The Larkya La Pass is both a key point and a starting point for trekkers like you. When you get used to the altitude in Samagaon (3,530 m) and visit the majestic Birendra Tal or the optional Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m), you’ll move up to Dharmasala (4,460 m) for one last night before crossing the pass.

Manaslu trek View

Your climb begins before dawn on frozen ground, winding past prayer-flagged piles of rocks to reach the 5,106 m high point in 4 to 6 hours. The path is winding and narrow, so be cautious while hiking. Even during the toughest portion of the trek, you’ll be rewarded by stunning views from Annapurna II in the west to Ganesh Himal in the east, with Manaslu’s northeast face rising 3 km above.

After spending some time in the past, it’s time for you to descend. The descent is steep, so you might need to use microspikes or crampons for the icy terrain. During the Manaslu Circuit, you’ll notice that Larkya La is physically divided into the Budhi Gandaki and Marsyangdi sides. You’ll meet people from the Hindu-Gurung culture in the Marsyangdi side, and Buddhist-Tibetan people in the Budhi Gandaki side.

Altitude Acclimatization and Rest Stops During the Classical Manaslu Circuit Trek

There is no doubt that the Classical Manaslu Circuit trek is a rewarding experience with a beautiful view of Mount Manaslu. However, the adventure takes place at high altitude, so the risk of altitude sickness is real. During your trek to Manaslu Circuit, you’ll rapidly gain in elevation from lowland villages to the Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) as the highest point. When you ascend from 600 m in Soti Khola to over 5,000 m in 10-12 days, you pose a risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) if your ascent is rushed.

If you need to minimize the risk of altitude sickness, you need proper acclimatization. Proper acclimatization allows the body to adapt by increasing red blood cell production, improving oxygen efficiency, and stabilizing fluid balance in the brain and lungs. Ensure you cooperate with trekking agencies and the Himalayan Rescue Association by following the ‘climb high, sleep low’ principle. You must also always elevate 300-500m net elevation every day.

manaslu trail with beautiful mountain view

Since you need an adequate place for acclimatization, the standard 14–18-day Manaslu Circuit itineraries incorporate your mandatory rest days at strategic villages. The first acclimatization stop for you is typically in Jagat (1,340 m) or Deng (1,860 m) after 2–3 days of low-elevation walking. It serves as a buffer before entering restricted high-altitude zones.

However, the most common acclimatization place occurs in Samagaon (3,530 m), which you’ll reach after 6–8 days. Here, you can spend an extra night and often go out on a day hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m) or Birendra Tal, gaining 700–1,000 m before returning to sleep at a lower elevation. If your Manaslu Circuit trek days are more than 18 days, you can also add a rest day in Samdo (3,875 m).

During Samdo acclimatization day, you can hike to Samdo Peak, or the Tibetan border, before returning to sleep. Along with acclimatization days, it is essential to stay hydrated to minimize the risk of altitude sickness. You must also eat meals that contain carbohydrates and engage in regular physical activities, rather than spending the day in bed.

Is the 15 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek Suitable for You?

Yes, the 15-day Classical Manaslu Circuit Trek is highly suitable for you if you are a beginner or a trekker with moderate to good physical fitness and some prior experience at high altitudes. However, it is not recommended for complete beginners. You may have found out that the Manaslu Circuit trail circles the world’s eighth-highest peak, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), reaching a maximum elevation of 5,160 m at Larkya La Pass. You are at high risk of altitude sickness if not properly acclimatized.

You can complete a 16-day trek (with approximately 12 days of actual walking) by starting at a higher elevation, either at Soti Khola or Machha Khola. Use jeeps to skip the lower parts of the trail. This will save time, but be prepared for challenging daily walks of 6–8 hours over steep and rough terrain. Ensure you are ready for extended climbs and descents, basic teahouse accommodations, and cold weather (down to -10°C at higher camps). You’ll need a Restricted Area Permit, such as the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. It’s also essential to have local guides and travel in a group of at least two for enhanced safety and security.

Your ability to trek to the Manaslu Circuit depends on how well you prepare. Focus on building your cardiovascular endurance and strength, especially in your legs and core. Practice hiking with a loaded backpack (10–12 kg) for 2–3 months before your trip to ensure you’re well-prepared. Since this trek is remote, rescue options are limited. Helicopter evacuations are possible but can be expensive and depend on the weather. Therefore, you need to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude emergencies.

Overall, your 15-day Manaslu Circuit trek is best suited for fit and experienced trekkers. This trek offers you a challenging and rewarding experience. It serves as a challenging alternative to the Annapurna Circuit. The 15-day itinerary strikes a good balance. This is ideal for those with limited vacation time. You need proper training, and also choose the best trekking agency. If you are a beginner, it is wise to start with another trek which are less tough, like Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, etc.

Preparing Your Mind and Body for the Classical Manaslu Circuit Trek

Preparing your Mind

You must prepare for your Manaslu Circuit trail by getting to know it. It’s a 16-day adventure that loops around Mount Manaslu in Nepal, featuring a significant pass called Larkya La at 5,160 meters. Make sure you grab a simple guidebook or watch quick videos so you know what’s coming: chilly nights, cozy tea houses, and zero roads.
You need to be honest with yourself and not think the trek will be a walk in the park. Get excited, but always remember “one step at a time”. For high altitudes, you can try short meditation and deep breathing to remain calm and composed during the challenging parts of the trek.

Preparing Your Body

The Classical Manaslu trek is one of the most challenging high-altitude treks in Nepal. Hence, it is essential to prepare your body by training adequately for your trek in the Manaslu region. Give yourself 2-3 months to train. You can walk or hike 4-5 days a week, starting with 1-2 hours and working up to 5-6 hours while carrying a 5-8 kg backpack. Throw in hills or stairs to copy the trek’s ups and downs. You can add easy exercises like squats, lunges, and core exercises to strengthen your legs and improve your balance.

Make sure to fuel up with energy-rich products like protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables, and drink plenty of water every day. If possible, you can sleep in a cooler room to prepare for those frosty nights. There is no doubt that the Manaslu Circuit is among the most challenging treks, due to a variety of factors affecting trek difficulty. So, your body must be ready to combat every obstacle that the Classical Manaslu route throws at you.

Taking Care of Yourself on the Trail

You must prepare your body and mind during the Manaslu Circuit adventure. Pack bright but light: warm layers, sturdy boots, a rain jacket, your water bottle, snacks, and basic medications for headaches or stomach troubles.

You can ease into each day by eating a solid breakfast and sipping 3-4 liters of water to stay hydrated. Minimize your risk of altitude sickness by climbing slowly and resting if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. Trust your guide, and make sure to sleep well in the tea houses to replenish your energy. If you feel uneasy, please inform your trek team. Keep in mind that reaching the destination is better than rushing and not getting there.
