Annapurna Circuit Trek in Brief

The Annapurna Circuit trek is a fun adventure that many people around the world enjoy. Every year, people visit Nepal to see the beautiful Annapurna region. This trek is one of the best in Nepal, rivaling popular trekking destinations like the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek.

The Circuit is a memorable trek featuring stunning landscapes. It begins in lush forests and rolling hills, transitioning to snowy valleys and towering peaks. You’ll encounter friendly villagers who share stories over tea. This trek offers beauty and surprises at every turn. From the rhododendron forests of the lower valleys to the stark high-altitude vistas of Thorong La Pass on the iconic Annapurna Circuit. Opened to foreign trekkers back in 1977, the Annapurna Circuit trail has been drawing thousands of adventurers every year since, and it’s easy to see why.

Your Annapurna Circuit adventure starts off with an 8-hour drive from Kathmandu to Bhulbhule. From there, you’ll start climbing through valleys and beautiful remote villages. You’ll reach popular destinations like Chame, Upper Pisang, Manang, Thorong La Pass, and Muktinath. Along with these popular spots, the Annapurna Circuit Trek also has hidden gems for adventurous travelers. One example is the Braka Monastery near Manang, which provides an amazing view of Annapurna. Another hidden gem on the trek is the Gangapurna Glacial Lake. It is located on a short trip from Chame. You’ll find icefalls and wildflowers surrounding this majestic lake.

Jomsom is a major tourist hub of the Annapurna region. It is renowned for its strong winds and the distinctive scent of apples and apple pies. Another tourist hub, Kagbeni, is equally beautiful. You’ll fall in love with its old mud-brick buildings, ancient monasteries, and peaceful trails. The Marpha Apple Orchards will offer you fresh apples and raksi brandy in a quiet atmosphere. Finally, Manang Village is your key stop for acclimatization. You’ll experience several prayer flags, caves, and yak caravans. These places show the trek’s toughness and beauty.

As your journey comes to an end, you’ll spend a few easy hours walking to Tikedhunga. After that, you’ll take a scenic drive to Pokhara, leaving the mountains behind and looking ahead to the sparkling Phewa Lake. That evening, enjoy a stroll by the Lakeside or go boating. You can grab a coffee, watch the boats go by, and let the peacefulness of your trip sink in. The next morning, you’ll take a bus or a short flight back to Kathmandu, concluding your Annapurna Circuit adventure.

Today is an essential day for trekkers. They leave Ledar, which is at 4,200 m, and head to Thorong High Camp, located at 4,850 m / 15,912 ft. The trek starts with a steady climb along the Jargeng Khola valley to Thorong Phedi. Here, the landscape transitions to a rugged, high-alpine area with stunning views of peaks such as Gangapurna and Annapurna III.

Many trekkers take a break here to rest before the final steep climb to High Camp, where they will gain 400 to 500 m in altitude through switchbacks. This climb is short but carries a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness due to the high elevation. Reaching High Camp is important because it is the highest point where one can sleep on the trek. This sets up trekkers for an early start to cross the Thorong La Pass the next day.

The climb will be challenging, but reaching the pass will be well worth it. It is advised that you start early in the morning, around 4 AM, to avoid afternoon winds. The lights from your torches, headlamps, and stars will navigate your way towards the peak of the pass. After reaching the peak, you’ll find the hike was well worth it.

The views of the Annapurna mountains, beautiful lakes, and glaciers look like a postcard. You can stop and take lots of pictures, even though you should be careful of the cold. As you descend into Muktinath, you’ll realize how easy it is to drop wearing crampons. You might slip often if you are not careful, as the base is pure ice, so be careful. Near Muktinath, you’ll see 108 stone taps pouring water from the Kali Gandaki river. Don’t forget to visit the eternal flame, which has been burning for over 2,000 years.

Additional Information

What Makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek a True Himalayan Adventure?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a true Himalayan adventure. This trek is special because it offers a variety of landscapes. Unlike many treks that focus on just one valley, the Annapurna Circuit takes you on a complete loop around the Annapurna Massif. You’ll experience a variety of climates and ecosystems.

You’ll start at a low elevation. The route takes you through lush paddy fields. You’ll walk among rhododendron forests, and as you climb, the scenery changes. Pine and fir forests appear at high altitudes. Then come the high alpine meadows. After passing Manang, you reach the Tibetan Plateau, where the landscape is barren.

A key part of the Manaslu Circuit adventure is the physical challenge and cultural experience it offers. The primary physical challenge is crossing the Thorong La Pass, which stands at 5,416 m and is one of the world’s highest trekking passes. You’ll need a careful acclimatization plan to overcome this formidable challenge. Although the trek is difficult, in return you’ll receive stunning views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, which is quite rewarding.

This gives travelers an honest look at life in the Himalayas, away from crowded spots like Pisang or Marpha. Local families operate teahouses that serve traditional meals, such as dal bhat and momos. They also share stories about Buddhist monasteries, prayer walls, and festivals like Losar. Trekkers can join evening puja ceremonies in ancient gompas or see shamanic rituals.

Can We Combine the Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek With Other Treks?

Yes, you can combine the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek with other treks. If you want a longer trek with more variety, you can add side trips to extend your journey. Many trekkers look for chances to explore more areas without having to go back to Pokhara or Kathmandu right away. Below are three popular and logistically feasible combinations of the Annapurna Circuit Trek with other treks.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with ABC Trek

You can combine your Annapurna Circuit Trek (ACT) with the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek, which is quite common. ATC with ABC creates a loop that features different landscapes. You’ll travel a variety of terrains, ranging from the dry high deserts of Manang, the Thorong La Pass, to lush rhododendron forests and the stunning arena of the Annapurna Sanctuary. Annapurna Circuit and Base Camp trek combination usually adds 5 to 7 days to the standard 15 to 18-day period. Your extra time depends on your pace, transport choices, and whether you include the scenic trek to Ghorepani-Poon Hill for sunrise views over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.

After finishing the ACT’s high-altitude section, you’ll descend into the Kali Gandaki Valley. Cross the challenging Thorong La Pass 5,416 m and reach Muktinath, then go downhill through the world’s deepest gorge to the windy town of Jomsom. You can also continue to Tatopani for natural hot springs. This marks the end of the classic ACT loop. From Jomsom or Tatopani, take a shared jeep or local bus (4-6 hours) southwest along the Beni road to Nayapul, which is the standard starting point for the ABC trek. If you prefer a full trekking experience, you can walk or take a jeep to Ghorepani, a 1-2 day extension from Tatopani. This lets you enjoy the famous Poon Hill viewpoint before joining the ABC path.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

You can also combine your Annapurna Circuit Trek with the side trek to Tilicho Lake. The ACT connects with Tilicho Lake from Manang. After reaching Manang, you’ll take the high road till you reach the small Tibetan settlement in Khangsar before reaching Siri Kharka. You’ll leave Siri Kharka in the morning and trek to Tilicho Base Camp.

Although the path is relatively easy, it does pass through landslide-prone areas, so be sure to stay safe and secure throughout the trek. You’ll leave Tilicho early in the morning to avoid afternoon winds, and in about two to three hours, you’ll reach Tilicho Lake and then return to Shri Kharka. The trail then connects to the ACT trail when you reach Yak Kharka, and then spend an overnight in Ledar.

Annapurna Circuit with Upper Mustang Trek

After you receive the restricted area permit, you can then start trekking north towards the Upper Mustang. After reaching Lo-Manthang and spending time there, you can return to Jomsom via the same route or fly out.
