Flying over the rugged Himalayan terrain and deep river gorges is an incredible way to start the 15 Days Upper Mustang Circuit Trek.

Jomsom is a famous town in the Kali Gandaki Valley, known for its strong Himalayan winds and rugged trans-Himalayan landscape. It is also the gateway to Upper Mustang. From here, you will start your trekking journey. Today’s destination is Kagbeni. You will trek the gentle, scenic Upper Mustang Circuit route along the wide Kali Gandaki Riverbed. The Kali Gandaki River is the deepest gorge in the world. Similarly, you will trek past Thakali villages, small monasteries, chortens, and colorful prayer flags. These provide you with your first cultural introduction to the Mustang region.

As you get closer to the village of Kagbeni, the landscape becomes more striking. You will come across narrow alleys and traditional houses made with mud-bricks. The trail is mostly isolated, but you may come across a few trekkers, locals, and yak caravans.

Similarly, you will cross two scenic passes on this day, the Taklam La (3,624 m) and Dajori La (3,735 m). Crossing these passes is moderately challenging, with few steep sections, narrow paths, strong winds, and rugged terrain. Standing at the top of these two passes is deeply rewarding and worth the effort. Taklam La offers a grand view of the Kali Gandaki Valley, while Dajori La offers sweeping views of the Himalayas, rugged cliffs, and barren valleys. The Upper Mustang Circuit Trekking trail also takes you past the beautiful green settlement of Samar. Here, you can see traditional houses with barley fields and apple orchards.

Additional Information

Why the Upper Mustang Circuit Trek Is Different from the Standard Route?

The Upper Mustang Circuit Trek differs from the standard route as it offers a complete cultural and geographical loop. Instead of following the same route, the circuit trekking trail enters and exits through a different route. Similarly, it takes you deep into the restricted area of the former Kingdom of Lo, through raw trans-Himalayan landscapes.

The varied landscape and culture along the circuit trek trail result from the region’s history, ancient trade routes, and geography. You will start the Upper Mustang Circuit Trek from Jomsom. Then, you will enter Kagbeni, one of the oldest settlements in the Mustang region, and a gateway to the Upper Mustang. The circuit route passes through Chele, Ghiling, Dhakmar, Tsarang, and Marang before reaching Lo Manthang. You will take the exit route through Yara, Tangge, Tetang, Muktinath, and Marpha. The trekking route allows you to explore most of the region’s unique landscapes.

All the villages you will come across during the Upper Mustang Circuit Trek trail are traditional settlements with strong Tibetan Buddhist influence. Hence, you can get a richer, more immersive experience. You will experience the gradual cultural transition from the beginning. In addition to the traditional settlements, you will traverse centuries-old monasteries, ancient caves, stupas, and chortens. In the lower areas of the Upper Mustang, you will come across traditional Mustang settlements. As you move to higher elevations, you will begin to see a greater influence from Tibetan Buddhists. As you descend near Muktinath and Marpha, you will get to experience Thakali culture.

In areas like Yara and Tangge, you will come across hidden cave systems, some of which are over 3,000 years old. Lo Manthang itself is one of the world’s best-preserved ancient Tibetan heritage sites. Another standout feature of the Upper Mustang Circuit Trekking trail, compared to the standard route, is that it follows sections of ancient salt and trans‑Himalayan trade routes between Nepal and Tibet. You will follow the same routes ancient traders once used for the Himalayan trade. Therefore, you will also gain insight into the region’s rich history and the story of human adaptation as you walk the route.

The Upper Mustang Circuit Trekking route offers a greater variety than the standard route. From the striking red cliffs and deep gorges to high-desert plateaus, wind-sculpted rock formations, the ancient walled city of Lo Mathang, river canyons, and apple orchards in Marpha, the scenery is constantly shifting. Each day, you will get to witness refreshing and exciting views along with the uninterrupted views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. In conclusion, the Circuit Trek offers a more rewarding, deeper Himalayan adventure beyond the standard Upper Mustang Trek route.

Upper Mustang Is One of Nepal’s Best Monsoon Treks

If there is any trekking destination in Nepal that is excellent for the monsoon season, Upper Mustang is the perfect choice. The area lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The towering peaks block the monsoon clouds. Thus, there is no rainfall in the area, and it is consistently dry throughout the year. The Upper Mustang Circuit Trek trail is accessible and comfortable to hike, even during the monsoon season.

Upper Mustang lies north of the main Himalayan range, behind the mountain peaks. During the monsoon, the moisture-laden clouds come from the Bay of Bengal. The massive peaks block the clouds, and they release most of the rain before crossing the mountain barrier. Hence, the Upper Mustang region receives minimal rainfall even during the peak monsoon season. It creates striking arid, desert-like landscapes. Similarly, the trekking trails are dry and stable.

July to August is the peak monsoon season in Nepal. These months receive the heaviest rainfall, with frequent showers and cloudy skies in hilly areas of the country. Surprisingly, the Upper Mustang area is dry with mild daytime temperatures and clear skies. Likewise, the visibility is excellent. You can enjoy clear views of the surrounding panoramas and uninterrupted trekking days. Since the climate is dry, you do not have to worry about wet trails or leeches. The Upper Mustang Circuit Trek trail is firm and offers consistent accessibility.

Another reason Upper Mustang is one of Nepal’s best monsoon treks is its quiet trails. As the monsoon is off-season for trekking, there are fewer trekkers on the trail. It means there are fewer crowds, permit processing is easier, accommodation availability is better, and services are more personalized. The season offers a tranquil Upper Mustang Circuit Trekking and a deeper sense of exploration and solitude. Overall, Upper Mustang is the ultimate monsoon trek destination in Nepal. The rainy season offers an ideal trekking window rather than an obstacle to exploring the unique trans-Himalayan landscape.

The Hidden Meaning Behind Upper Mustang’s Ancient Cave Systems

There are over 10,000 ancient sky caves in Upper Mustang. These caves are carved into the cliffs above the Kali Gandaki. Witnessing them is not only about seeing geological wonders but also about immersing oneself in the culture, spirituality, and history of Tibetan Buddhism in the region. Visiting these sky caves is like stepping into a 1000-year-old Himalayan time capsule.

These caves give an air of mystery and appear inaccessible at first glance. Buddhist monks used some of them as meditation chambers and retreat shelters. The high altitude and isolated location of the sky caves provided the monks with perfect places for deep spiritual practices and meditation. These caves also contain ancient murals, inscriptions dating back 2,000 years, scriptures, and burial relics, all of which showcase a strong connection to Tibetan Buddhism and Bon traditions.

In addition to meditation, the sky caves were used for other purposes. They are as follows:

Ancient human settlements

According to Archaeological studies, some of the sky caves date back over 3,000 years and were among the earliest human settlements in the Himalayas. They were used as caves and storage chambers. As these caves are carved into the cliffs, they protected the inhabitants from the harsh weather of Upper Mustang, the cold temperature, and invaders. The locations were selected for the sunlight, wind patterns, and natural protection.

Rest stops

The ancient salt trade route from Nepal and Tibet ran through Upper Mustang. As a result, many traders used the route for commercial purposes. The sky caves in the area served as rest stops for the travelers. Similarly, these were also used as storage chambers and strategic lookout sites. These caves are a reminder of Upper Mustang’s role as an important trade route between the Tibetan Plateau and South Asia.

Hideouts

The high altitude and locations of the sky caves also made them ideal hideouts. During times of war and conflict, locals used them as defensive retreats. The caves were positioned with clear views of the surrounding valleys. Hence, locals could spot threats from afar. Some sky caves had hidden entrances, making them secure from outside threats. Likewise, archaeologists found hidden tunnels connecting certain cliff-side caves, serving as secret passageways. In addition to serving as hideouts, these caves could be used as makeshift living quarters during crises.

Burial and ritual sites

Many sky caves were used as burial chambers for the dead, following the ancient Himalayan funeral customs. The bodies were sometimes mummified or placed in specific niches. Archeological studies found skeletons, pottery, and other ritual artifacts inside the caves. These showcased medieval Tibetan Buddhist beliefs about life, death, and rebirth.

The ancient sky caves remain a source of mystery, and locals consider them sacred. Many remain unexplored due to cultural sensitivities, while others are inaccessible due to sheer cliff faces and high-altitude terrain. Similarly, the fragile nature of the caves with crumbling walls and ceilings makes exploring them risky.

Cultural Etiquette in a Former Himalayan Kingdom

Upper Mustang is among the few places on earth where the ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture remains alive and well-preserved. Respecting cultural etiquette is essential to preserving a culture’s unique identity. Similarly, practicing the proper etiquette also honors the living heritage of the centuries-old former Himalayan kingdom. It is strongly recommended that you practice mindfulness and cultural sensitivity throughout the Upper Mustang Circuit Trek.

Here are some cultural etiquette tips that you need to remember during your trek to Upper Mustang:

  • Dress modestly when visiting the monasteries, covering your shoulders and knees.
  • Walk clockwise around the stupas and prayer wheels. Avoid touching any sacred objects or statues. Do not climb or sit on chortens or stupas as they are sacred monuments.
  • During prayers or meditations, speak softly and maintain silence. Avoid loud conversations or disruptive behavior in monasteries or caves.
  • The sky caves were meditation chambers, hideouts, or burial chambers. Locals still use some for spiritual purposes. Hence, treat them as sacred spaces. Do not enter without permission, touch artifacts, make loud noises, or leave litter.
  • Always obtain permission before photographing people, especially monks, families, and children.
  • Always ask for permission before taking photos inside monasteries, during religious ceremonies, or during rituals.
  • Avoid using flash photography in sacred sites, as it can damage ancient murals or disrupt rituals or spiritual practices.
