Mardi Himal Trek in April: Weather, Trail and Rhododendrons

Yes, April is a good month for the Mardi Himal Trek. The rhododendron forest is in flower, days are mild, and High Camp mornings are usually clear. The trade-offs are afternoon cloud, some spring haze, cold nights below freezing at High Camp, and possible snow above 4,200 m.

In this guide, our guides walk you through April weather, the bloom, snow on the ridge, crowds, cost, and packing. They also share how our 6-day route feels day by day in spring. If you already know you’re trekking the Mardi Himal Trek in April, you can talk to our team and ask for April 2027 dates or a private departure.

Is April a Good Month for the Mardi Himal Trek?

Yes. April sits in the spring trekking season, and it is the second-busiest month in the Annapurna region after October. There is a reason so many trekkers pick it.

The forest is at its best. Days are warm enough to walk in a T-shirt in the lower sections. And the daylight lasts longer than in autumn, so you never rush to reach the teahouse before dark.

But April is not autumn. The air is softer and hazier, and clouds build earlier in the day. So should you still go? Look at the trade-offs below and decide for yourself.

What You Get in AprilWhat You Trade For It
Rhododendron forest in full flower up to about 3,500 mHaze and afternoon cloud hide the peaks after midday
Mild days, 15 to 25°C in the lower forestNights still below freezing at High Camp
Long daylight, more time to walk slowlyOld snow possible on the ridge above 4,200 m
Lively trail, easy to meet other trekkersSmall lodges at High Camp fill up fast
Dry trails, no monsoon mud or leechesLate April gets humid and hazier as monsoon nears

Early April vs Late April on the Ridge

Early April feels closer to March. Mornings are crisp and clear, nights are colder, and there is more leftover snow above the Viewpoint. The rhododendrons are flowering in the lower forest but may only be starting higher up.

Late April feels closer to May. It gets warmer and stickier, the haze thickens, and clouds arrive sooner. On the other hand, the bloom climbs higher and the snow on the ridge melts back.

If clear mountain views matter most, go in the first two weeks in the April. If you care more about flowers and warmer nights, the second half works well too.

Mardi Himal Weather and Temperature in April

Weather on a Mardi Himal Trek in April follows a pattern our guides know well. You walk through three climate zones in three days, from warm farmland near Dhampus to a cold, windy ridge at 4,200 m.

That is a swing of more than 20°C between your first lunch stop and your summit morning. So the real question is not “how cold is it?” It is “how cold is it where I am sleeping tonight?”

PlaceAltitudeApril DaytimeApril Night
Pokhara820 m25 to 30°C15 to 18°C
Pritam Deurali2,100 m15 to 20°C5 to 8°C
Forest Camp2,550 m12 to 18°C2 to 6°C
High Camp3,580 m5 to 12°C-5 to 0°C
Viewpoint at sunrise4,200 m-8 to -2°C with windNot a sleeping stop

These are typical ranges, not promises. A cold front can drop High Camp well below them for a night or two.

Clear Mornings and Cloudy Afternoons

Here is the April rhythm. Mornings start clear and still. By late morning, warm air rises from the valleys and pulls cloud up with it. By 1 or 2 pm, the ridge is often wrapped in mist.

That is not bad news, honestly. It is the reason Badal Danda, at about 3,300 m, gets its name. Badal means cloud, and in April you often stand above a white sea of it while the valleys below disappear.

It also explains why our itinerary puts the Viewpoint hike at 4 am. You walk in the dark, reach the top before sunrise, and get the mountains while the sky is still clean.

Spring Haze and Smoke From Forest Fires

Now the part most blogs skip. In spring, farmers in the lower hills burn fields, and forest fires break out across Nepal. Some years, the smoke drifts up into the Annapurna foothills in late March and April.

One trekker who walked Mardi Himal in late March wrote that the haze rolled in on her third day. She did not see a snowy peak again for the rest of the trek.

It does not happen every week or every year. But it is the main reason we say early April and early mornings. Your guide also checks the forecast in Pokhara before you start, and can shift the plan by a day if the haze looks heavy.

Rhododendron Bloom Along the Mardi Himal Trail

If you are coming for the flowers, April is your month. The forest between Pothana, Pritam Deurali, Forest Camp and Low Camp is thick with rhododendron, oak and maple. In spring, it turns red, then pink, then white as you climb.

The colours follow altitude. Red lali gurans, Nepal’s national flower, blooms first in the lower forest. Paler pink and white flowers open higher up as the month goes on. Our guides count more than 10 types of rhododendron along this trail.

Where else can you walk under a ceiling of red flowers for most of a morning, then look up and see a 7,000 m peak through the gaps? That is Day 3 on our route in a good April. For many of our guests, this forest is the reason they choose a Mardi Himal Trek in April over autumn.

After Low Camp, the trees thin out. By Badal Danda, you are in open grassland with low shrubs. Here, the hills look rust-brown in spring, because the new green grass has not come through yet.

Snow Above High Camp: Viewpoint or Base Camp in Spring?

This is the single most useful thing to know about a Mardi Himal Trek in April. The trail up to the Viewpoint at 4,200 m is usually clear. The narrow ridge from the Viewpoint to Base Camp at 4,500 m is another story.

In spring, old winter snow can sit on that last section. Early morning, it freezes into a hard crust. A trekker who walked it in late March without crampons turned back at about 4,200 m, because the slope was too slippery to cross safely.

So what happens on your summit morning? Our guides decide on the spot, based on what they see.

Ridge ConditionWhat Your Guide Will Do
Dry trail, no snow above 4,200 mContinue to Base Camp, about 1.5 to 2 more hours
Thin, soft snow and a fit groupContinue slowly with microspikes, turn back by mid-morning
Hard crust, deep snow or strong windStop at the Viewpoint and enjoy the sunrise there
Thick cloud on the ridgeWait at the Viewpoint for a gap, then head down

Here is the honest part. Many experienced trekkers say the Viewpoint is the better photo spot anyway. From Base Camp, you stand right under Machhapuchhre, but the side ridges block part of the wider range. From the Viewpoint, you see more of it in one frame.

So turning around at 4,200 m is not a failure. It is often where the best photo of your trip comes from.

How Busy Mardi Himal Gets in April

April is busy. Mardi Himal is still quieter than the ABC trail, but it has grown fast over the last ten years. Lhakpa Lama, one of our licensed high-altitude guides, puts it simply: “Ten years ago, nobody walked this ridge.”

The lower part of the trail rarely feels crowded. The pressure point is High Camp and Low Camp. There are only a handful of lodges up there, and on a busy April night, late arrivals can end up sleeping in the dining room.

This is where having a team behind you matters. Our guides call ahead to book rooms before each day’s walk. One of our trekkers, Nikolai from Minneapolis, wrote that when his usual lodge at Pritam Deurali turned out to be overbooked, his guide moved the group to a warmer one within the hour.

Permits, Guide Rules and Cost for a Mardi Himal Trek in April

You need one permit for this trek, the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, or ACAP. It costs NPR 3,000 for foreign trekkers. You no longer need a TIMS card for the Annapurna region, even though older blogs still mention it.

Since April 2023, foreign trekkers in Nepal’s conservation areas must walk with a licensed guide. On Mardi Himal, this matters for more than paperwork. Above Low Camp, the trail is narrower and less clearly marked than busier routes, and a guide who knows the snow line is your best safety tool in spring.

Our 6-day package costs USD 380 per person. It covers teahouse rooms and three meals a day on the trek, your ACAP permit, a licensed guide, one porter for every two trekkers, and transport as listed in the itinerary. A daily oxygen saturation check, a sleeping bag and a down jacket are also included.

What you pay for yourself are small extras. Budget for hot showers, phone charging, Wi-Fi, snacks and tips. Food prices also climb as you go higher, because everything at High Camp is carried up on someone’s back.

What to Pack for Mardi Himal in April

On a Mardi Himal Trek in April, you pack for two seasons at once: spring in the forest and winter on the ridge. Your porter carries up to 9 kg of your gear, so keep your daypack light and smart.

  • A light base layer and a T-shirt for the warm forest days.
  • A fleece and a warm hat for evenings at Forest Camp and High Camp.
  • A windproof shell, because the ridge above Badal Danda gets windy with nowhere to shelter.
  • Warm gloves for the 4 am hike, when your fingers will feel it most.
  • A headlamp with spare batteries for summit morning.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm, since the spring sun is strong above 3,500 m.
  • A light rain jacket, because late April can bring short afternoon showers.
  • Trekking poles for the long descents to Low Camp and Siding.
  • Microspikes, if your guide suggests them for your dates.

You don’t need to buy a heavy jacket or sleeping bag for this trek. We provide both, along with water purification tablets, so you can refill from teahouse taps on the way.

Nepali New Year and Pokhara in April

Mid-April brings Nepali New Year, which lands on the first day of the month of Baisakh. In Pokhara, the Lakeside area gets livelier around this time, with families out by the water and street food on every corner.

If your dates line up, it is a nice reason to keep your Pokhara evening free. After a cold week on the ridge, sitting by Phewa Lake with a plate of momos and the city in a festival mood feels like a reward.

What Trekkers Ask About Mardi Himal in April

Conclusion

A Mardi Himal Trek in April gives you the best of the Nepali spring. You get forest in full flower, mild days and long daylight, and a sunrise at 4,200 m that stays with you. The trade-offs are real: hazy afternoons, cold nights at High Camp and possible snow on the ridge.

Plan around them and April works very well. Start early, sleep warm, and let your guide make the call on the ridge.
